Do It Yourself Roof Patch Repair

Year after year, when you look up at your roof you see lots of shingles sitting there doing their job protecting your roof from wet weather. What you don’t see is all the beatings the shingles take from wind, rain, and snow storms. Your roof takes on lots of wear and tear, and some shingles may pay the price. But not to fret, if you’re not afraid of ladders and your roof has a moderate slope, there are roof patch repair kits to seal up leaky spots.

Shingle Issues

If you ever notice missing shingles or shingles that curl up and won’t lay flat, after the next rain storm stand on the lawn and look up at the roof and guesstimate the approximate problem areas on the roof. This will help you trace down the source of the leaks in the roof. Then get up in the attic and shine a flashlight in the general area of the missing or damaged shingles. Check for any water damage on the underside of the roof sheeting or feel for wet insulation. If you have either of those two issues you have a leak and will want to get into the roof patch process. If you don’t want to wait for a rainstorm, aim a garden hose at the area with missing shingles to simulate rainwater.

Patching the Roof

It may seem harder to find the source of leaks than completing the repair. Once you know where the leaks are located, take the roof patch sealant which comes in a tube and insert into a caulk gun. Cut off the plastic top of the nozzle and slide a nail inside to pierce the plastic seal. Then squeeze out the sealant and apply around the shingles. The roofing patch sealants come in different colors. That way if you have dark shingles, the sealant will blend in. If you even have gray or green shingles, these color options are available as well.

For curling shingles, try to straight out the high points and nail down to the roof. Then generously apply the roof patch sealant over the nail heads as well as any areas that still curl. Fixing curled shingles is best done in the summer. Heat from the sun will make the shingles more pliable. In cold weather the shingles will be hard and could be brittle. So be careful.

So, if you’re not afraid of ladders a roof patch repair kit can help you close up leaky problems and make your roof watertight once again.
